Online Trading Risks

Trading online carries risks such as power outages, telephone disconnections, and internet service interruptions. We advise all traders that they should have contingencies in place to handle such risks. A VPS system or a second phone such as a mobile phone in case the phone service is down, would be possible backup choices. A second internet provider such as a wireless service in addition to your ADSL or satellite service is a good idea and for day traders a generator backup system in case of power failure is also an important consideration.

If you purchase or sell Equities, Futures, Currencies or Options you may sustain a total loss of the initial margin funds and any additional funds that you deposit with your broker to establish or maintain your position. If the market moves against your position, you may be called upon by your broker to deposit a substantial amount of additional margin funds, on short notice in order to maintain your position. If you do not provide the required funds within the prescribed time, your position may be liquidated at a loss, and you may be liable for any resulting deficit in your account. It is possible to lose substantially more money than you deposited in your account, if you use leverage in your trading. This can result in a large debt to broker, and financial hardship. Under certain market conditions, you may find it difficult or impossible to liquidate a position. This can occur, for example, when the market makes a “limit move” or if the price “gaps” from one price to another (with no offsetting orders available between the two prices to get you out of your trade). The placement of contingent orders by you, such as a “stop-loss” or “stop-limit” order, will not necessarily limit your losses to the intended amounts, since market conditions may make it impossible to execute such orders.
